Bikeability Level 1 & 2 - Year 6
We are delighted to announce that 43 Year 6 children have signed up to take part in Bikeability Level 1 and Level 2 training this term.
Bikeability is the government's national cycle training programme, designed to help children develop the skills and confidence they need to ride safely and responsibly.
What is Bikeability Level 1?
Level 1 takes place in a traffic-free environment, usually on the school playground. During these sessions, children will learn how to:
- Carry out simple safety checks on their bicycle
- Start and stop safely
- Control their bike confidently
- Use their gears effectively
- Ride one-handed while maintaining control
- Look around and be aware of their surroundings
These skills help children become more confident and competent cyclists before progressing onto public roads.
What is Bikeability Level 2?
Once instructors are satisfied that children are ready, they move on to Level 2 training. This takes place on quiet local roads and teaches pupils how to:
- Start, stop and ride safely in real traffic situations
- Understand road positioning
- Pass parked vehicles safely
- Communicate clearly with other road users using signals
- Recognise and respond to hazards
- Make left and right turns safely at junctions
The aim is to give children the knowledge and confidence they need to make independent journeys safely.
Looking Forward
We are incredibly pleased that 43 of our Year 6 pupils have volunteered to take part in this valuable training opportunity. Bikeability not only develops cycling skills but also encourages independence, responsibility and healthy, active lifestyles.
We look forward to seeing our pupils grow in confidence and enjoy learning these important life skills over the coming weeks.
